Robotic surgery will soon be delivered from Townsville in 2021 following a historic agreement being finalised between Townsville Hospital and Health Service and Mater Private Hospital Townsville.

The agreement will see Mater secure a revolutionary da Vinci robot that will be able to be used by patients across the public and private healthcare system in the region.

The public and private partnership with the Townsville Hospital and Health Service is crucial in bringing the robot to Townsville. Mater is working through the details of the partnership with Townsville University Hospital to make this technology available to our community.

Robotic surgery has been proven to lead to shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, lower risk of infection. This is the future of how our world-class surgeons will operate and it is so exciting to be bringing this capability to Townsville.

Our expert medical and clinical teams at Mater will be developing their skills, experience and expertise needed to deliver this world-class service to our community. In the future the robot can be used for patients requiring urological, gynaecological, colorectal and ear, nose and throat procedures.

This arrangement will allow people in the public system to access this technology while ensuring we have enough throughput to make delivering the service sustainable. The Robotics program is expected to be commence in early 2021.

We look forward to keeping the community updated on the details of this agreement.
