Shane Turner

Meet Shane Turner
Orderly Services Supervisor

When Shane graduated from Townsville State High School, he had no idea of  what pathway he would pursue.

"I was supposed to be a tiler or carpenter, like my dad and uncle, but I got too many splinters,’’ he joked.

By chance he had a mate who worked at the Mater as an Orderly and suggested he apply.
"At the time I thought it sounded pretty cool, especially when he told me he carried a pager," laughed Shane.

That was 19 years ago, and whilst the novelty of carrying a pager has well and truly worn off, Shane’s love for his job hasn’t.

I know it sounds like a cliché but helping people is very fulfilling – it makes you feel good.

Shane supervises a team of 20 Orderlies, whose duties are many and varied.

"We are genuine helpers,’’ he said. "We help staff, patients and visitors; and no two days are the same.’’

Over the years, Shane estimates he has met tens of thousands of people.

"I like listening, and a lot of people just need a friendly ear,’’ he said. "I know it sounds like a cliché, but helping people is very fulfilling – it makes you feel good.’’

Outside of work, Shane loves nothing better than playing doting Uncle to his Nephew.  His other great love is the North Queensland Cowboys.

As a mad-keen supporter, Shane even chose to propose to his wife, Dani, during a Cowboys vs Newcastle game in 2008.
