Biography and Clinical interests

Dr April Miu is a breast and general surgeon practising at Mater Private Hospital Townsville (MPHT).

She completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales and holds a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Dr Miu undertook surgical training at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, NSW.

Her post-fellowship training in breast surgery, including reconstruction and defect closure following lumpectomy, was completed across hospitals in New Zealand and Australia, including Auckland City Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital and Wollongong Hospital.

Dr Miu consults and operates at MPHT and holds a public appointment at Townsville University Hospital. She is the designated surgeon for BreastScreen and a surgical training supervisor for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and General Surgeons Australia.

She is a senior lecturer at James Cook University and an instructor for the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient program.

Dr Miu treats all aspects of breast disease, including cancer and benign conditions, and assisted in implementing the SCOUT guided breast cancer surgery technique in Townsville in 2024. This radar-based method allows accurate removal of abnormal tissue while minimising trauma and removing the need for external wires.

She is a member of the NQMIS practice, supported by a dedicated breast care nurse who provides patient education and care before and after surgery.
